THE ORIGINAL MOTIVATION OF WESLEYAN THEOLOGY THE WAY OF SALVATION
Main Article Content
Abstract
John Wesley’s theology is often described as a theology of grace, yet it can also be understood as a theology of salvation, or more precisely, of the way of salvation. This perspective highlights the existential dimension of his religious experience, where grace and salvation are inseparably linked. Between 1725 and 1740, Wesley struggled with spiritual dissatisfaction despite rigorous devotional practices, until realizing that salvation rests on faith through grace. His metaphor of the house—prevenient grace as the porch, justifying grace as the entrance, and sanctifying grace as the interior—illustrates a salvific architecture. Thus, Wesley’s theology emerges from lived practice and experience, articulating grace as a response to human questions and structuring it as an experiential theology of salvation.
