Abstract

This article discusses the theology and practice of the wesley brothers regarding the lord's supper, seeking to illuminate the current exercise of eucharistic hospitality, the openness to welcome people of different Christian confessions to the communion table. it mentions the anglican basis of methodist sacramental theology, but also its willingness to embrace other viewpoints, inaugurating a rather inclusivist vision. based on foundational wesleyan writings, it presents the multiplicity of meanings attributed to the holy communion, without exclusively adhering to just one of them. the supper is a memorial, thanksgiving, a celebratory act of the church, a means of grace, the presence of christ through the holy spirit, communion, eschatological anticipation, etc. it also discusses wesley's position regarding the controversies that divided christians in the 16th century, the effects of which are still visible today. finally, it examines the methodist practice of the open and universal invitation to the communion table and the commitment to a eucharistic lifestyle, expressed in the struggle for life and justice in society, as well as in the pursuit of concrete unity in the body of Christ.
