NJILA YA KALUNGA : LE MONDE ATLANTIQUE, NJINGA, WESLEY ET TAYLOR ET LA FORMATION DU KWANZA MÉTHODISTE [Résumé de thèse de doctorat présentée et soutenue dans le programme de troisième cycle en études de la religion et théologie à l’Université Méthodiste d’Angola en 2025]

Résumé
Ce travail examine l’émergence et le développement de la narration méthodiste en Angola, particulièrement dans le corridor fluvial du Kwanza, à la lumière des entrelacements historiques et symboliques entre cultures, religions et systèmes esclavagistes, tels que configurés dans les concepts de monde atlantique, Atlantique noir et grand Kalunga. Le parcours investigatif part de l’hypothèse selon laquelle l’institutionnalisation d’une expression religieuse en consonance avec la trajectoire de résistance du peuple angolais constitue un facteur essentiel dans la reconfiguration de l’espace atlantique comme territoire d’émancipation. Il est ainsi proposé de lire le Kwanza Méthodiste comme un espace de synthèse et de tension entre culture, religion et esclavage, sous les regards et témoignages historiques de trois figures paradigmatiques : la Reine Njinga, enracinée dans l’univers spirituel du grand Kalunga ; John Wesley, prêtre anglican dont la conscience religieuse critique l’a conduit à rejoindre le mouvement abolitionniste ; et William Taylor, évêque méthodiste dont la militance abolitionniste a orienté l’action missionnaire en Angola. Cette recherche se propose d’établir des ponts interprétatifs entre le monde atlantique européen et l’univers spirituel africain du grand Kalunga, afin de comprendre les articulations historiques entre cultures, religions et systèmes esclavagistes. Dans ce parcours, l’action de la Reine Njinga est analysée comme une réponse afrocentrée aux dynamiques impériales, tandis que la figure de John Wesley est recontextualisée comme penseur critique des intersections entre foi chrétienne et esclavage. La thèse démontre également l’engagement abolitionniste de William Taylor, mettant en évidence ses choix éthiques et stratégiques dans la construction d’un modèle missionnaire alternatif en territoire africain. Enfin, le Kwanza Méthodiste est reconstruit comme un espace de synthèse entre spiritualité, culture et libération, affirmant une utopie enracinée dans l’autonomie communautaire, la co‑égalité et la valorisation de l’identité linguistique angolaise. En recourant à l’herméneutique narrative de Gerhard von Rad, privilégiant la réactualisation des récits fondateurs comme sources de sens et de résistance, il s’agit de comprendre comment l’espérance demeure une force active dans la construction d’alternatives éthiques et spirituelles aux logiques coloniales. De plus, son herméneutique sert d’inspiration pour la structuration de cette thèse.
