“DO NO HARM, DO GOOD, LOVE GOD”: THE METHODIST GENERAL RULES AND THE FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article offers a theological-practical interpretation of the Methodist General Rules as a framework for resisting corruption. It begins with a critique of pessimistic, idealistic, and enthusiastic theological models, which, according to the author, fail to provide effective responses to corruption. The General Rules are examined as a normative that integrates spirituality and social ethics. Their affinity with monastic traditions, the biblical double commandment, and the conception of works of mercy and piety is emphasized and love for neighbor is seen as a concrete expression of divine love. Wesley’s understanding of these works as means of grace highlights their transformative potential for both giver and receiver. The article concludes that the General Rules promote a theology and praxis of integrity, rooted in prevenient grace and lived in community, capable of identifying and opposing corrupt structures through an embodied, relational, and prophetic spirituality as an ethical manifesto against systemic corruption.
