A CONSTRUÇÃO DISCURSIVA DA ALTERIDADE: A AUSÊNCIA DE RACISMO EXPLÍCITO NA OBRA DO BISPO WILLIAM TAYLOR, SUA POSTURA ABOLICIONISTA

Resumo

Este artigo apresenta um estudo da linguagem empregada por William Taylor, missionário e ao final da sua carreira, bispo metodista, em quatorze das suas obras, escritas entre 1860 e 1898. O objetivo é investigar de que modo e, se for o caso, até que ponto tais textos revelam convicções de supremacia étnica e racista ou, alternativamente, posicionamentos abolicionistas. Como método realize-se uma análise da presença e do uso das seguintes palavras: culture, civilization, civil, civilized, religion, religions, negro, negroes, niggers, heathen, heathens, heathenish, heathenism, heathendom, pagan, pagans, pagan (ad.) race, races, idol, idols, idolatry, idolaters, idolatrous, empire, empires. Conclui-se que, em uma época do pleno expansionismo e imperialismo europeia e estadunidense – especialmente no Sul da África, com a Conferência de Berlin em 1885 – e pelo surgimento de novos colonialismos formas do racismo religioso e científico, William Taylor abandona em grande parte a linguagem racista presente em muitos textos de agências da missão e de missionários e missionárias. Argumenta-se que este cuidado com a linguagem representa e, ao mesmo tempo busca popularizar suas profundas convicções abolicionistas, como parte essencial da sua concepção da missão cristã.
