LA CONSTRUCCIÓN DISCURSIVA DE LA ALTERIDAD: LA AUSENCIA DE RACISMO EXPLÍCITO EN LA OBRA DEL OBISPO WILLIAM TAYLOR Y SU POSTU-RA ABOLICIONISTA

Resumen

Este artículo examina el lenguaje empleado por William Taylor—misionero y, en la etapa final de su carrera, obispo metodista—en catorce de sus obras publicadas entre 1860 y 1898. El estudio busca determinar si, y en qué medida, estos textos reflejan convicciones de supremacía étnica o racial o, alternativamente, compromisos abolicionistas. Metodológicamente, el análisis se centra en la presencia y el uso de términos clave tales como: culture, civilization, civil, civilized, religion, religions, negro, negroes, niggers, heathen, heathens, heathenish, heathenism, heathendom, pagan, pagans, pagan (ad.) race, races, idol, idols, idolatry, idolaters, idolatrous, empire, empires. Los hallazgos sugieren que, durante un período marcado por el expansionismo y el imperialismo europeos y estadounidenses—especialmente en África meridional tras la Conferencia de Berlín de 1885—y en medio del auge de nuevas ideologías coloniales y del racismo científico, Taylor se abstuvo en gran medida de utilizar el lenguaje racista prevalente en muchas publicaciones misioneras. El artículo sostiene que esta contención lingüística refleja y busca difundir sus profundas convicciones abolicionistas, que él consideraba parte integral de la vocación misionera cristiana.
