LA CONSTRUCTION DISCURSIVE DE L’ALTERITE: L’ABSENCE DE RACISME EXPLICITE DANS L’ŒUVRE DE L’EVEQUE WILLIAM TAYLOR ET SA POSITION ABOLITIONNISTE

Résumé
Cet article examine le langage employé par William Taylor—missionnaire et, dans la dernière étape de sa carrière, évêque méthodiste—dans quatorze de ses ouvrages publiés entre 1860 et 1898. L’étude vise à déterminer si, et dans quelle mesure, ces textes reflètent des convictions de suprématie ethnique ou raciale ou, au contraire, des engagements abolitionnistes. Sur le plan méthodologique, l’analyse se concentre sur la présence et l’usage de termes clés tels que: culture, civilization, civil, civilized, religion, religions, negro, negroes, niggers, heathen, heathens, heathenish, heathenism, heathendom, pagan, pagans, pagan (ad.) race, races, idol, idols, idolatry, idolaters, idolatrous, empire, empires. Les résultats suggèrent que, durant une période marquée par l’expansionnisme et l’impérialisme européens et américains—en particulier en Afrique australe après la Conférence de Berlin de 1885—et au milieu de l’essor de nouvelles idéologies coloniales et du racisme scientifique, Taylor s’est largement abstenu d’utiliser le langage raciste répandu dans de nombreuses publications missionnaires. L’article soutient que cette retenue linguistique reflète et cherche à diffuser ses profondes convictions abolitionnistes, qu’il considérait comme constitutives de la vocation missionnaire chrétienne.
